My husband and I and our two sons (in their twenties) have just returned from a magical 2 1/2 weeks in India. We are all calling it the holiday of a lifetime. The country is amazing - the culture, architecture, heritage, handicrafts, people, colour and sounds are all wonderful.
Ganpat was a dream tour operator. We conversed by Whatsapp mainly, making it extremely convenient to arrange our itinerary in advance and to ensure everything went smoothly whilst there. He is so attentive - he can't ever sleep! He says that Guest is God - and it certainly felt like that. We loved the itinerary which he recommended and saw some truly amazing places. We also wanted to watch some cricket (IPL) and he booked the internal flights and tickets for us and then we paid him back. He could not have done enough for us to ensure that we were entirely happy all the time.
We stayed in 5 star hotels and we loved the luxury which we couldn't have afforded in the UK. Just remember that food and drinks in the hotels will be at 5 star prices but since Ganpat provided us with our own driver and air conditioned car, he could take us to alternative restaurants which were chosen for cleanliness and quality food. We grew very fond of our driver - Mahendra Singh. He was so dedicated and could not do enough for us. And he was such a safe and careful driver. He really made the trip for us. The long car journeys went really quickly too, as there is so much to see. The guides that Ganpat arranged in each location were also extremely good and knowledgeable and brought everything to life.
We loved the hustle and bustle of Delhi - a highlight was the rickshaw trip through old Delhi. Agra and the Taj Mahal was amazing and do go for sunrise as you miss the crowds. We paid for one of the professional photographers to take our photos. It cost more than we realised when we agreed to have them taken, but it was worth it. Also go at sunset from gardens at the rear as that was lovely too, with amazing starling swirls. Rathambore and tiger hunting was lovely, but sadly we were a bit early in the season to see a tiger. Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur were all fascinating cities - just when we thought we might not want to see another temple or fort, it turned out we did, as they are all amazing. Walking through the pink (Jaipur) and blue (Jodhpur) cities was also fun and immersive, whilst the boat trip at the lake city (Udaipur) was lovely (again, go early to miss the crowds). Varanasi and the Ganges at sunrise and sunset was a totally different experience, full of colour and spirituality (and mozzies!). And then Hyderabad for our IPL match was well worth an extra internal flight as it showed a different type of Indian city, being further south.
We will miss the colour, the honking of horns and the excitement of India. But we will return and we will ask Ganpat to look after us once more.
